Swedish Flower Hens

Picture
Swedish Flower Hens were first imported to North America by Greenfire Farms in Florida, in 2010.  At the time of their import, they were extremely rare, even within their native Sweden, and unheardof elsewhere.
We imported chicks in the spring of 2012, and to date there remain very few in Canada.
Swedish Flower Hens are a landrace.  This means that they developed more based on their adaptations to their environment, and less based on selective breeding for cosmetic traits.  This means that their colour patterns can vary a great deal.  They are an extremely hardy breed, good foragers, yet particularly calm around humans.  Our rooster watches over his ladies, but has shown no aggression to people, and remains lovely to handle.
The name `flower hen`comes from their beautiful and varied colour patterns.  Reds, browns, creams, all flecked with other colours make up the flock.  We have a mixture of crested and non-crested birds.
Swedish Flower Hens lay large to extra large eggs in shades of white to ivory.  I have been amazed at the size of the eggs, considering the medium sized birds.
They have quickly become one of my favourite breeds.
